In this article, the basic principles of drug delivery are provided. They are also discussed the routes of drug administration and the most common drug formulations for ophthalmic treatment. The essential ophthalmic medications necessary in small animal practice, the most appropriate medication for specific ocular conditions and the precautions when using therapeutic or diagnostic ophthalmic medications are discussed as well.
