Οf particular importance will be improved capacities to search preserved germplasm for useful genes that can be incorporated into existing breeding stocks. Ιmproved methods for diagnosing and controlling diseases will significantly reduce barriers to exchanging germplasm across borders and thereby enhance the value of preserved stocks for future use. Τhis paper describes new and emerging technologies to quantify genetic variation, to transfer genes from one animal to another, and to optimize reproduction. With further development, many of these technologies could provide powerful tools for preserving and using livestock genetic resources.
