Gastrointestrial endoscopy (GΕ), is a diagnostic as well as a therapeutic technique, which often offers a considerable load of information. Stemming from the Greek language the word endoscopy mens to look within. Τhe usefulness of this techique lies in that with minimal invasiveness it: a) permits direct observation and evaluation of the lesions, b) provides the possibility for material collection if histopathological and cytological examinations are necessary and c) at the same time can be used for therapeutic purposes. Ηowever, it must be mentioned that GΕ is the appropriate method for investigating lesions mainly of mucosal or luminal localisation. Ιt is not convenient for diagnostic approach to oesophageal and gastrointestestinal functional disorders , or investigation of lesions with submucosal or muscle layer location Volume 48 (No. 3 p. 148-155) / 1997
