There has been some six years since the causative agent of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome has been identified. Since then, a significant income of knowledge as regards the features of the responsible virus, epidemiology, immune response and methods for diagnosis and control has been derived. The control of the syndrome was mainly based on supporting therapy for secondary infections and on modifications of management methods, while the first vaccines are recently emerging in the market. In the present study, a general overview of the syndrome giving emphasis to principles for virus control and eradication is presented. The first field trials in Greece with the inactivated vaccine Cyblue are also discussed
