Among foodborne diseases, human salmonellosis due to consumption of contaminated animal origin food was enormously increased the last decade worldwide. In the present study, during the period 1987-1994, 7.471 food samples of animal origin were tested for the presence/absence of Salmonella spp and 423 out of them were found positive for Salmonella spp. They shared between the Greek origin food (129 samples) and the ones imported from EU countries (243 samples) and non-EU countries (51 samples). All twenty-four Salmonella serotypes have been isolated and the predominant serotype among the Greek origin products was Salmonella enteritidis while Salmonella infantis and Salmonella typhimurium were the predominant isolated serotypes among the EUC and non-EUC origin products respectively.
